ADA Seal of Acceptance Awarded
to Chewing Gum

The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs (CSA) has awarded the Seal of Acceptance to Wrigley Orbit Sugar Free Gum, Wrigley Extra Sugar Free Gum and Wrigley Eclipse Sugar Free Gum, the first chewing gum products available to receive the Seal. CSA awarded the three Wrigley products the Seal after reviewing laboratory and clinical studies showing "that the physical action of chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating stimulates saliva flow, which helps prevent cavities by reducing plaque acids and strengthening teeth." The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. will announce more details at a September 25 press conference in Chicago so it's possible some of your patients will see press coverage and have questions about sugar-free gum. Wrigley also will include information about the products in an upcoming mailer to ADA members. ADA spokespersons will also be present at the press event. See ADA.org and the October 1 ADA News for details.

70 Percent of the US Population Now Receives Optimally Fluoridated Water
By Mark J. Feldman, DMD, President, American Dental Association

July 10, 2008—"We welcome this very encouraging news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the increase in the number of Americans receiving optimally fluoridated water.  We know from years of experience and scientific study that community water fluoridation benefits everyone. The ADA has long advocated water fluoridation as the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.  Our members are committed to working with federal, state and municipal governments to increase even further the number of Americans who benefit from it."
